What is ABA Therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to analyzing and explaining  behavior. Behavior analysts observe environmental events and identify what a person may be attempting to gain or access through a behavior. Certain patterns of behaviors may be a form of communication for basic needs such as food, water, help, or a break from activities.

Using the principles of ABA, therapists arrange learning environments that increase positive interactions such as requesting, social initiations, and listening to directions. The plan is individualized to the child and continuously adjusted to their needs.

What is Autism?

Autism is a developmental disorder in which individuals may experience difficulties with social communication and social interaction. Some may find it difficult to develop and maintain relationships, while some may not engage in play or take interest in peers. These patterns are typically first observed during the early developmental period when the child is 2-3 years old.

What Does an ABA Therapy Session Look Like?

Sessions are typically fun and relaxed to create an effective learning environment. Therapists use toys, games, pictures, flashcards and various materials to create engagement and natural learning opportunities. The majority of time is directed by the therapist, while family members participate at specific times to enhance the child’s learning experience. Progress is carefully tracked through data collection to ensure continual growth and development.
